Description
Rendered in lateral profile, the cervical vertebral column is presented as a stacked series of vertebrae with small, broad vertebral bodies anteriorly and posterior elements projecting into the midline as short, often bifid spinous processes. The transverse processes extend laterally, framing the expected location of the foramina transversaria, while the superior and inferior articular processes form the zygapophysial (facet) joints along the posterolateral margin. Two mid-cervical vertebrae, consistent with a C4 to C5 level based on proportions and position, are highlighted to draw attention to a specific motion segment. Mid-cervical segments are where degenerative change frequently declares itself, and a lateral view is the workhorse for explaining cervical lordosis, segmental alignment, and disc height loss at C4 to C6. Small anterior translation at this level helps clarify the distinction between physiologic motion and pathologic spondylolisthesis, while posterior element anatomy grounds discussions of facet arthropathy as a driver of axial neck pain. This perspective also supports correlation with lateral radiographs and sagittal CT or MRI, where uncovertebral osteophytes and foraminal narrowing can be localized to a particular level for radiculopathy workups. Suitable for gross anatomy and musculoskeletal courses, this illustration also fits well in spine chapters discussing cervical spondylosis, whiplash-associated disorders, and preoperative planning narratives for anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) at a mid-cervical level. Use it in patient-facing education to orient “front” (vertebral bodies and discs) versus “back” (laminae, facets, and spinous processes).
