Description
Posterior thoracic anatomy is presented with the ribs sweeping laterally from the thoracic vertebrae, the scapulae resting over the upper rib cage, and the sacrum and iliac crests framing the inferior limit of the back. Internal intercostal muscle slips occupy the interosseous portions of the intercostal spaces, running inferoposteriorly from the inferior border of each rib toward the superior border of the rib below, and they taper as they approach the rib angles. Medial to the costal angles, near the vertebral column, the muscular fibers give way to the internal intercostal membrane, explaining the conspicuous gap in contractile tissue adjacent to the spinous and transverse processes.
