Description
Framed from a posterior perspective of the male knee, the distal femur sits superior to the tibial plateau, with the fibular head positioned posterolateral to the proximal tibia at the proximal tibiofibular joint. The posterior fibular head ligament is rendered as a dense, obliquely oriented band spanning from the posterior aspect of the fibular head toward the posterolateral tibia, reinforcing the joint capsule. Lateral to the tibial margin, adjacent collateral fibers and periarticular soft tissue planes help anchor the fibula while keeping the patellar region out of frame anteriorly. A wedge of fibrocartilage at the tibiofemoral interface suggests the posterior horn region of the lateral meniscus. Posterior reinforcement of the proximal tibiofibular joint matters when you need to explain why subtle instability here can mimic posterolateral knee pain, or why a posterolateral approach must respect the fibular head as a landmark. The common fibular (peroneal) nerve wraps around the fibular neck just distal and lateral to this ligamentous complex, so edema, traction, or surgical dissection in this corridor carries a real risk of neuropraxia.
