Description
Arising from the thyrocervical trunk and crossing the posterior triangle of the neck, the suprascapular artery tracks laterally toward the superior border of the scapula and the suprascapular notch. From a posterior shoulder perspective, it is seen passing superior to the transverse scapular ligament, then curving onto the dorsal surface of the scapula to reach the supraspinous fossa before continuing around the lateral border toward the infraspinous fossa. Superficial layers include the trapezius and posterior deltoid, with deeper planes suggesting the supraspinatus and infraspinatus over their fossae and the proximal humerus lateral to the scapular spine. Arteries and accompanying veins course between muscle bellies and along osseous margins. Clean landmarks. This relationship at the suprascapular notch is a classic teaching point because the artery typically runs over the ligament while the suprascapular nerve passes under it, a configuration relevant to suprascapular nerve entrapment and to planning decompression at the notch. Posterior approaches around the scapular spine and supraspinous fossa also demand awareness of the vessel’s course to limit bleeding and to preserve perfusion to the rotator cuff, particularly during cuff repair, scapular fracture fixation, or exposure near the spinoglenoid notch where the artery contributes to regional anastomoses.
