Description
Running across the posterior scapular region, the suprascapular artery courses from the lower neck toward the superior border of the scapula, then fans out over the supraspinous and infraspinous fossae. From this vantage, the vessel is read against clear bony landmarks, including the spinous processes of the cervical and upper thoracic vertebrae, the posterior ribs, and the scapulae with their spines and medial borders. Branching is directed laterally toward the shoulder girdle, with smaller arteriolar calibers implied as the supply enters the rotator cuff muscle beds. Red arterial pathways and accompanying blue venous channels help orient inflow and outflow around the scapular blade. Posterior visualization matters because the suprascapular artery is a major contributor to the scapular anastomosis, linking neck and axillary inflow through connections with the circumflex scapular and dorsal scapular systems. This collateral network becomes clinically relevant when proximal subclavian or axillary artery flow is reduced, and it is routinely taught as the reason perfusion can persist around the shoulder despite proximal obstruction. The vessel’s relationship to the suprascapular notch and the superior transverse scapular ligament is also a practical teaching point when discussing suprascapular nerve entrapment and operative exposure near the superior scapular border.
