Description

Oriented in a posterior perspective, the ulnar artery is traced from the proximal forearm near the cubital region, where it passes deep to the flexor-pronator mass as it leaves the brachial artery bifurcation. From there the vessel descends along the ulnar (medial) side of the forearm, closely related to the ulna and to the flexor carpi ulnaris, then continues toward the wrist and into the hand. Distally, its contribution to the superficial palmar arch is suggested by branching into the palmar circulation and digital arteries, with accompanying venous channels shown in parallel. Posterior orientation matters because it clarifies where the ulnar artery becomes less accessible and more protected by muscle, a point that affects both trauma patterns and surgical exposure. In forearm lacerations near the medial wrist, ulnar artery injury can compromise perfusion to the ulnar digits and the superficial palmar arch, and the clinician often assesses collateral flow via the radial artery (for example with an Allen test) before arterial cannulation or harvest. This pathway also frames the relationship between vascular structures and the ulnar nerve at the wrist in Guyon canal, a common site for combined neurovascular symptoms in cyclists and manual workers.
