Description
Posterior to the medial epicondyle, the posterior ulnar recurrent artery ascends from the proximal ulnar artery and tracks superiorly toward the posterior elbow, where it contributes to the periarticular arterial anastomosis. Proximally, the brachial artery descends along the arm before bifurcating near the cubital fossa into the radial artery laterally and the ulnar artery medially, both continuing distally through the forearm toward the hand. Distal branches converge into the superficial and deep palmar arches, supplying the digits via common and proper palmar digital arteries. Orientation is clear. A posterior perspective helps you map the recurrent pathway that links the ulnar system to elbow collateral flow, a point that becomes clinically relevant when the brachial artery is compromised proximally or during elbow trauma. Surgical exposure and instrumentation around the medial epicondyle and olecranon, including ulnar nerve decompression or repair of triceps tendon and olecranon fractures, can place these small vessels at risk of bleeding or postoperative hematoma if their course is not anticipated. The recurrent network also explains why distal perfusion can persist despite focal injury, and why angiographic interpretation around the elbow can look deceptively complex.
