Description
Oriented in anatomical position, the posterior view of the temporal bone emphasizes the mastoid portion with its roughened external surface and the mastoid process projecting inferiorly. Superior to the mastoid region, the squamous part blends toward the temporal lines, while the petromastoid junction sits more medially where the bone thickens toward the petrous part. Along the posteromedial aspect, the mastoid notch and adjacent margins frame attachments for the posterior belly of digastric and sternocleidomastoid, and the posterior border approaches the occipitomastoid suture. Surface texture matters here. Clinical work often starts on this side of the bone. The mastoid air cell system lies deep to this rugged cortex, and posterior mastoid landmarks guide mastoidectomy and the surgical corridor to the middle ear and lateral skull base while helping the operator stay oriented relative to the sigmoid sinus groove and posterior cranial fossa dura. Acute mastoiditis can erode these air cells and track toward the sigmoid sinus or posterior cranial fossa, so recognizing the topography of the mastoid cortex and its sutural boundaries is not academic, it informs risk. Use this posterior temporal bone view in gross anatomy labs when teaching cranial sutures and muscle attachment sites, and in otolaryngology and neurosurgical teaching materials that introduce mastoidectomy landmarks and complications of middle ear infection. It also fits well in radiology or anatomy correlation plates where CT of mastoid air cells and the sigmoid sinus groove are matched to palpable and visible bony reference points.
