Presented from a lateral perspective, the zygomatic bone (os zygomaticum) is shown as the dominant facial buttress forming the malar eminence of the midface. The orbital surface contributes to the lateral wall and floor of the orbit, while the temporal process extends posteriorly to meet the zygomatic process of the temporal bone, completing the zygomatic arch. Superiorly, the zygomaticofrontal region approaches the lateral orbital rim, and inferiorly the maxillary process descends to articulate with the maxilla at the zygomaticomaxillary junction. Bilateral symmetry is implied, but the lateral view emphasizes the bone’s anterior prominence and its posterior sweep into the arch. This angle is the one you want when teaching the structural role of the cheekbone in transmitting masticatory and impact forces from the maxilla toward the cranial base via the zygomatic arch. Fracture patterns around the frontozygomatic suture, infraorbital rim, and zygomaticomaxillary buttress define classic zygomaticomaxillary complex injuries, with lateral displacement flattening the malar eminence and narrowing the coronoid clearance beneath the arch.
