Description
Presented from a posterior perspective, the distal triceps brachii converges into a broad, dense triceps tendon that passes inferiorly to insert on the olecranon of the ulna. Proximal to the insertion, the tendon lies superficial to the posterior capsule of the elbow joint and is bordered laterally by the anconeus near the posterolateral elbow. Distally, the tendon fibers flatten as they approach the subcutaneous olecranon, with the ulna positioned medial to the radial head in anatomic terms. Fiber direction is clear. Posterior elbow anatomy is where extension power and posterior stability meet, and the triceps tendon is the key landmark. Acute triceps tendon rupture classically occurs with a sudden eccentric load, leaving a palpable gap proximal to the olecranon and loss of active elbow extension, so a clean posterior view helps learners recognize what fails and where.
