Description
Sectioned in quarter profile, the testis is opened to reveal the seminiferous tubules arranged in lobules deep to the tunica albuginea, converging posteriorly toward the mediastinum testis and rete testis. From the rete, the efferent ductules pass into the head of the epididymis, which drapes along the posterosuperior pole and continues inferiorly into the body and tail as a tightly coiled epididymal duct. Color contrast isolates the comma-shaped epididymis on the external posterolateral surface while preserving continuity with the intratesticular outflow tract. Vessels track along the capsule and hilum. Clear orientation. This cut clarifies a point that students often miss on gross specimens: spermatogenesis occurs within seminiferous tubules, but sperm leave the testis only after traversing the rete testis and efferent ducts into the epididymis for maturation and storage. That anatomical sequence matters clinically when localizing obstructive azoospermia, distinguishing epididymal obstruction from intratesticular failure, and when planning sperm retrieval techniques (for example, MESA from epididymal tubules versus TESE from seminiferous tubules). The posterior relationship of epididymis to testis is also the key landmark in scrotal exploration, since torsion commonly spares the epididymis itself while twisting the spermatic cord proximally.
