Description
Across a cross-section of the male skull, the globe sits centrally within the bony orbit while the superior rectus muscle is flattened against the superior aspect of the eyeball, coursing anteriorly from the orbital apex to its scleral insertion. Posteriorly, its fibers converge on the common tendinous ring (annulus of Zinn) deep to the orbital roof, with the optic nerve emerging from the posterior pole of the globe just medial to the rectus cone. Medial and lateral rectus muscles flank the globe in the horizontal plane, the inferior rectus mirrors the superior rectus inferiorly, and the superior and inferior oblique muscles arc obliquely around the globe to contribute torsional control. Portions of the paranasal region appear inferomedially, placing the orbit in immediate relationship to the nasal cavity and adjacent sinuses. Superior rectus anatomy matters because it anchors the discussion of the intraconal space and the oculomotor nerve’s superior division, the motor supply that is classically injured in superior orbital fissure or cavernous sinus syndromes. Damage produces impaired elevation and a characteristic limitation of upgaze, often accompanied by ptosis when levator palpebrae superioris involvement is present. This sectional perspective also clarifies why lesions at the orbital apex can affect extraocular motility and vision together, the optic nerve runs within the same crowded posterior corridor.
