Description
Viewed from superior after a transverse section through the cranial base, the calvaria is opened to expose the floor of the cranial cavity and the transition between the anterior and middle cranial fossae. Anteriorly, the frontal bone and ethmoid region sit superior to the nasal cavity, with the cribriform plate and crista galli lying in the midline; posterior to this, the lesser wings of the sphenoid form the boundary before the middle cranial fossa drops inferiorly. More laterally, the temporal bones frame the middle fossa, with petrous ridges running obliquely posteromedially toward the clivus and occipital bone, and the foramen magnum positioned in the posterior midline. This sectional orientation clarifies how the sphenoid body and its wings partition the cranial fossae and how neurovascular corridors cluster at the skull base. The region is a daily reference for skull base surgery: endoscopic transsphenoidal approaches target the sellar and parasellar area, while middle fossa approaches must respect the proximity of the petrous temporal bone to the carotid canal and the foramina transmitting cranial nerves.
