Seen from a superior aspect, the encephalon is dominated by the paired cerebral hemispheres separated along the midline by the deep longitudinal fissure. The cerebral cortex surface relief is clear, with gyri and sulci forming the convex superolateral margins and continuing toward the interhemispheric cleft. Along the midline, the fissure implies the position of the falx cerebri deep to the cranial vault, while posteriorly the occipital poles mark the back of the cerebrum; the cerebellum may be only partially suggested, tucked inferior and posterior beneath the occipital lobes. A top-down view is the cleanest way to teach hemispheric organization and midline landmarks without distraction from the brainstem and ventral vasculature.
