Description
Oriented in the anterior perspective, the cerebrum dominates the field with the left and right frontal poles separated by the interhemispheric fissure and bordered laterally by the frontal opercular region, its gyri and sulci providing surface relief. Inferior to the frontal lobes, the ventral brainstem comes into view, with the midbrain leading down to the pons and the medulla oblongata in the midline. Posterior and inferior to the brainstem, the cerebellar hemispheres and vermis form a compact mass, tucked beneath the cerebral hemispheres. An anterior brain view matters when teaching or planning approaches that use midline and ventral landmarks, because it forces orientation around structures that are frequently referenced but easy to invert mentally, the pons, medullary pyramids, and the relationship of the cerebellum to the brainstem. This is the perspective that helps you explain why basilar artery occlusion produces pontine syndromes, and why ventral brainstem compression at the foramen magnum in Chiari I malformation can coexist with cerebellar tonsillar descent.
