Viewed from superior, the cerebral hemispheres fill the frame, separated along the midline by the longitudinal fissure and meeting anteroinferiorly at the frontal poles and posteroinferiorly at the occipital poles. Convolutions of the cerebral cortex form interlacing gyri and sulci across the dorsolateral surfaces, with a subtle left to right asymmetry typical of the adult male encephalon. Near the superomedial margin, the central sulcus region is suggested by the course of neighboring gyri, placing the precentral gyrus anterior to the postcentral gyrus on either side of the midline. No brainstem or cranial nerves are emphasized from this perspective. A superior overview is the workhorse orientation for teaching hemispheric topography, because it clarifies how the longitudinal fissure partitions right and left cortex while still allowing you to map functional landmarks onto surface anatomy. Correlating the central sulcus and adjacent gyri to the primary motor and primary somatosensory cortices is clinically concrete, since ischemic stroke in the anterior cerebral artery territory preferentially affects the superomedial precentral and postcentral regions and can produce contralateral lower extremity weakness and sensory loss. It also supports discussions of hemispheric asymmetry and lateralization without forcing a deep dive into ventricular or deep nuclear anatomy. Clean and direct.
