Description
Seen from superiorly, the pia mater forms a thin leptomeningeal film that closely invests the gyri and dips into the sulci over the convexities of both cerebral hemispheres. Fine pial vessels course within this translucent layer and bridge across sulcal openings, while the longitudinal fissure separates the right and left hemispheres along the midline from anterior frontal pole toward posterior occipital pole. Surface relief is prominent. The pial sheen follows every contour. That intimacy with the cortical surface is the teaching point: unlike dura mater and much of the arachnoid, the pia cannot be separated cleanly from the brain without violating cortex, which matters during microsurgical dissection and specimen handling. This superior perspective also supports clinical discussions of meningeal inflammation and vascular spread, since leptomeningitis involves the pia and arachnoid and can track along the subarachnoid space and into sulci, and pial arterial and venous congestion underlies the appearance of cortical hyperemia in infection or subarachnoid blood products along the convexities. Neuroanatomy and neuropathology courses use a view like this to orient students to hemispheric landmarks and meningeal layers before moving to coronal sections, ventricular anatomy, and the circle of Willis. It also fits well in neurosurgical atlases and patient-facing materials explaining subarachnoid hemorrhage distribution over the cerebral convexities versus extra-axial collections that spare sulci.
