Description
Right lateral views of the male brain place the pia mater as a thin leptomeninx draped directly on the cerebral cortex, following the sulci between adjacent gyri rather than bridging them. Superficial cortical vessels course within this pia-arachnoid interface, tracking along the lateral surface of the frontal, parietal, temporal, and occipital lobes before turning into the fissures. Inferoposteriorly, the pia continues seamlessly over the cerebellar hemispheres and along the contours of the brainstem (midbrain, pons, and medulla), maintaining close apposition to the underlying neural tissue. For teaching meningeal anatomy, this lateral perspective makes a practical point: the pia is the membrane that truly conforms to brain topography, unlike dura mater, and it provides the immediate investing layer around pial arteries and veins. That distinction matters in subarachnoid hemorrhage, where blood tracks within the subarachnoid space over the cortical convexity and into sulci, and in leptomeningeal infection or carcinomatosis, where enhancement follows the pial surface and fissures on contrast MRI. A thin membrane with big implications.
