Description
Seen in an axial (transverse) section through the cranial vault, the pia mater forms a thin leptomeningeal layer closely adherent to the cerebral cortex, draping into the sulci while remaining continuous over the crowns of the gyri. Superficial cortical gray matter lies immediately deep to the pia, with subcortical white matter deeper and more central, and the ventricular system appearing near the midline as CSF-filled spaces. The calvaria encircles the intracranial contents peripherally, defining the bony limits of the section. Pia is the membrane you cannot separate cleanly from cortex, and that relationship matters in both teaching and clinical interpretation. This superior perspective supports discussion of subarachnoid hemorrhage, where blood tracks within the subarachnoid space over the convexities and along the sulcal patterns that the pia invests, and it also reinforces why leptomeningeal enhancement on contrast MRI follows the cortical surface and sulci rather than forming a smooth dural-based sheet.
