Description
Sectioned calvaria exposes the cranial meninges, with the inner table of the frontal and parietal bones cut away to reveal the dura mater lining the cranial vault. Deep to the dura, the arachnoid mater (leptomeninx) spans the brain surface and sends fine arachnoid trabeculae inferiorly toward the pia mater across the subarachnoid space. Thread-like strands bridge between arachnoid and pia over the cerebral convexity, while superficial meningeal vessels course along the interface between dura and arachnoid and within the subarachnoid compartment. Spatially, the arachnoid sits internal to the dura and external to the pia, conforming less tightly to the gyri and sulci than the pia does. This cut section is the teaching view for understanding where cerebrospinal fluid actually lives and why blood in the subarachnoid space tracks along sulci and cisterns after a ruptured berry aneurysm. It also clarifies the mechanical basis of bridging vein vulnerability: veins traverse from the cerebral surface toward the dural venous sinuses, so acceleration injuries can tear them and produce a subdural hematoma between dura and arachnoid.
