Description

Sagittal cut anatomy through an adult male cranium exposes the calvaria and cranial base with the frontal sinus anteriorly, while the meningeal layers line the inner table. Dura mater lies directly deep to bone, and the arachnoid mater spans the subdural space to form a smooth barrier superficial to the pia mater, which closely invests the cerebral surface and descends into sulci. Arachnoid granulations protrude superiorly into adjacent dural venous sinuses, and the subarachnoid space between arachnoid and pia contains cerebrospinal fluid around the brain; the ventricular system is also opened in section, with the lateral ventricles continuous with the third ventricle and the cerebral aqueduct leading to the fourth ventricle. Attention to the arachnoid barrier and its granulations matters because this is where CSF returns to the venous circulation, primarily via the superior sagittal sinus and its lacunae. Blocked absorption at arachnoid villi or impaired venous drainage produces communicating hydrocephalus with ventriculomegaly, while tearing of bridging veins across the subdural space can create a subdural hematoma that separates dura from arachnoid. A clean midline section also helps teach why blood in the subarachnoid space, for example after ruptured berry aneurysm, mixes with CSF and tracks around the brain, while epidural collections remain bound to sutural anatomy. Use this artwork for neuroanatomy and head and neck courses when you need a single frame linking meninges, subarachnoid CSF, arachnoid granulations, and ventricular anatomy, or for neurosurgery and neuroradiology teaching that contrasts hydrocephalus patterns and intracranial hemorrhage compartments. It also fits medical publishing on CSF physiology, dural venous sinus anatomy, and meningeal pathology in adult male specimens. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
