Description
Oral cavity anatomy is rendered with the tongue opened to expose the median septum linguae (lingual septum) as a dense fibrous partition running in the midline from the apex toward the root. Along either side of this septum, the intrinsic tongue musculature is organized into right and left halves, with the genioglossus positioned inferomedially and fanning superiorly into the substance of the tongue. Inferior to the tongue, the mylohyoid forms a muscular diaphragm spanning between the medial surfaces of the mandible, while the mandibular body and teeth frame the field laterally and anteriorly, with the maxillary dentition visible superiorly. Seeing the septum linguae from a superior orientation clarifies how the tongue’s bilateral muscular compartments maintain midline stability while still allowing complex deformation during speech and swallowing. That midline fibrous plane matters during partial glossectomy and tongue-splitting approaches, where surgeons use the septum as an anatomic guide to limit cross-midline dissection and to anticipate the course of the deep lingual vasculature in the adjacent tongue substance. It also helps explain why some neoplastic and infectious processes respect the midline early, then breach it when tumor growth or edema disrupts septal integrity. A clean midline.
