Description
Seen from the inferior (ventral) aspect, the pia mater closely invests the basal surface of the cerebrum, dipping into the sulci and cisternal recesses around the midline. Anteriorly, the optic nerves converge on the optic chiasm, highlighted in yellow, with the optic tracts continuing posterolaterally toward the diencephalon. Posterior to the chiasm, the brainstem occupies the central axis, and the cerebellum sits inferior and posterior to it, separated by the region of the fourth ventricle and surrounding subarachnoid cisterns. The membrane’s intimate adherence makes the cortical gyri and intervening grooves read as shallow relief rather than a free sheet. For teaching visual pathway anatomy, the ventral surface matters because the optic chiasm is where nasal retinal fibers decussate, the anatomical basis for bitemporal hemianopia in chiasmal compression from pituitary macroadenoma or suprasellar meningioma. This perspective also maps cleanly onto operative corridors used in transsphenoidal and subfrontal approaches, where the relationship between the chiasm, hypothalamic region, and proximal optic nerves guides safe dissection under the arachnoid.
