Description
Viewed from a dorsal (superior) perspective, the cerebral hemispheres are seen separated by the longitudinal fissure, with the pia mater draped directly over the cortical gyri and dipping into the sulci. The meningeal membrane reads as a thin, glassy layer that follows the contours of the cortex rather than bridging over grooves, distinguishing it from arachnoid mater. Along the superomedial margins, the pia tracks toward the interhemispheric surfaces where it remains closely applied to the underlying gray matter. Symmetry dominates. That pial adherence matters when you are teaching the surface anatomy of the brain, because it frames the true topography the surgeon or neuroanatomist works with, not a smoothed abstraction. In meningeal hemorrhage or leptomeningitis, blood or inflammatory exudate occupies the subarachnoid space between arachnoid and pia, but the pia itself remains the layer that stays fixed to cortex and carries penetrating arteries into the parenchyma. The dorsal view also supports orientation to midline landmarks (longitudinal fissure and the course of the superior sagittal sinus in the attached falx cerebri) even when the dural reflections are not shown.
