Seen from a lateral perspective through the frontal cranial compartment, the dura mater forms a thick meningeal lining deep to the calvaria and frontal bone, separating the inner table from the superficial surface of the frontal lobes. Its periosteal layer adheres to the skull, while the meningeal layer reflects medially toward the falx cerebri along the midline. Laterally, the dura follows the contour of the cranial vault over the cerebral convexity, with the arachnoid and pia implied deep to it on the cerebral gyri and sulci. Bone and brain sit on opposite sides of the same barrier. That relationship matters in trauma and in the OR. In a frontal or pterional approach, dura opening and dural tack-up sutures are planned with the inner skull surface in mind to reduce epidural bleeding, classically from meningeal vessels and diploic channels. Extra-axial hemorrhage patterns also hinge on meningeal anatomy: an epidural hematoma lifts dura from bone, while a subdural hematoma tracks between dura and arachnoid after bridging vein injury, often along the convexity where the membrane is less firmly adherent than at sutures. Small differences in adherence change the spread of blood. Use this asset in neuroanatomy and head and neck anatomy courses to teach the meningeal layers in context of skull and cerebral surface anatomy, or in neurosurgery and emergency medicine materials explaining extra-axial hemorrhage and dural opening/closure.
