Seen in lateral profile, a frontal section through the male cranial cavity places the arachnoid mater between the dura mater externally and the pia mater adherent to the cortical surface. The arachnoid spans the sulci as a meningeal membrane, while delicate arachnoid trabeculae would be inferred crossing the subarachnoid space to the pia over the gyri. Superficial cerebral vessels course within the subarachnoid space, draped over the cerebral convexity, and the view extends inferiorly to include the brainstem and posteriorly the cerebellum tucked beneath the occipital lobes. A lateral cut is the clearest way to teach where cerebrospinal fluid actually resides, in the subarachnoid compartment rather than within the arachnoid itself, and how that space relates to cortical contours and bridging veins traveling toward the dural venous sinuses.
