Description
Seen from the dorsal aspect, the dura mater forms a firm meningeal covering draped deep to the calvaria, separating the transparent skull cap from the cortical surface of the cerebral hemispheres. Bilateral hemispheres sit side by side across the midline, with the dura spanning between them along the sagittal plane where the falx cerebri would be expected to project inferiorly toward the longitudinal fissure. Posteriorly, the dural reflection over the cerebellar region corresponds to the tentorium cerebelli, creating a roof over the posterior cranial fossa and defining the superior limit of the cerebellum. For teaching cranial meninges, a dorsal view clarifies how the meningeal layer relates to the inner table of the skull and why dural reflections partition intracranial compartments. That relationship underpins classic patterns of hemorrhage: epidural hematoma collects between calvaria and periosteal dura, while subdural hematoma tracks between dura and arachnoid and can spread widely over the convexity, crossing sutures but respecting dural septa.
