Description
Anterior abdominal anatomy is rendered in a semi-transparent female child, allowing the large intestine to be followed through the peritoneal cavity. The ascending colon rises on the child’s right side from the cecal region in the right iliac fossa toward the hepatic flexure, then the transverse colon crosses superiorly beneath the stomach region to the left upper quadrant at the splenic flexure. From there, the descending colon tracks inferiorly along the left flank into the sigmoid colon in the left lower quadrant, continuing into the rectum in the midline of the pelvis. Clear orientation. Pediatric colon position and redundancy differ from adult norms, and that matters when you are explaining symptoms or planning imaging. This angled 3D perspective helps correlate surface anatomy with intraluminal pathology such as fecal loading in functional constipation, a common pediatric presentation that can distend the rectosigmoid and displace adjacent small bowel loops.
