Description
Posterior anatomy of the female cranium is rendered with the parietal bones meeting at the sagittal suture and joining the squamous occipital bone along the lambdoid suture. Inferiorly, the occipital region transitions into the skull base at the craniovertebral junction, where the atlas (C1) supports the occiput and the axis (C2) sits immediately distal with its dens projecting superiorly into the ring of C1. Blue color coding isolates C1 and C2 against the remaining cervical vertebrae, whose spinous processes align in the midline and whose transverse processes project laterally. C1 and C2 matter because this is where most physiologic head rotation occurs and where instability carries high neurologic stakes, so a clean posterior view helps you teach how the occiput, atlas, and axis stack and move as a unit. Atlantoaxial instability in rheumatoid arthritis, odontoid fractures after falls, and traumatic C1 burst fractures all hinge on understanding the relationship between the posterior arch of the atlas, the axis, and the foramen magnum margin.
