Centered on the female anterior thorax, the mammary adipose tissue forms the bulk of the superficial breast, lying anterior to the pectoralis major fascia and extending from the parasternal region laterally toward the anterior axillary line. Deep to this subcutaneous fat, lobules of mammary gland (lobus glandulae mammariae) and their radially oriented lactiferous duct system converge toward the nipple and areola, while the retromammary space separates the gland from the pectoral musculature. Intercostal nerves course in the underlying thoracic wall and give off anterior and lateral cutaneous branches that traverse the gland and fat toward the skin, accompanied by perforating vessels from the internal thoracic system medially and branches related to the lateral thoracic circulation laterally.
