Description

This posterior perspective is useful because pediatric abdominal organ topography differs from adults: the liver is proportionally larger and often extends more caudally, which alters what you expect to palpate below the right costal margin and how you interpret organ displacement on imaging. That relationship to the right kidney matters in renal ultrasound windows and in cross sectional anatomy, where hepatomegaly, hepatic masses, or subphrenic collections can efface the hepatorenal recess (Morison pouch) and change the contour of the upper pole of the kidney.
