Description
Centered in the right upper quadrant of a female child, the liver occupies a subdiaphragmatic position beneath the lower ribs, with its right lobe extending more laterally and inferiorly than the left lobe. A subtle fissural pattern implies lobar organization, including the plane of the falciform ligament separating the larger right lobe from the smaller left lobe on the anterior surface. Through the semi-transparent abdominal wall, neighboring gastrointestinal viscera are also apparent, with small intestinal loops occupying a more central and inferior position and the large intestine framing them more peripherally. Lobar orientation matters because pediatric liver size and edge contour are assessed every day in clinical practice, from bedside palpation at the right costal margin to ultrasound correlation in suspected hepatomegaly.
