Description
Anterior mediastinum anatomy is rendered in a pediatric male torso with translucent integument, allowing the thymus gland to be seen lying immediately posterior to the manubrium and upper body of the sternum. The bilobed thymus occupies the superior mediastinum and may drape inferiorly toward the pericardium, sitting superior to the heart and anterior to the great vessels, with its left and right lobes separated by a thin connective tissue septum. Laterally, its margins approach the mediastinal pleura, while superiorly it extends toward the thoracic inlet in front of the trachea. Orange highlighting isolates the organ against the surrounding thoracic soft tissues. Pediatric thymus position and size matter because thymic involution has not yet occurred, so the gland can be prominent on chest radiography and CT, sometimes mimicking an anterior mediastinal mass. This view helps clarify why a normal thymus may produce a classic “sail sign” on pediatric chest X-ray and why chemical shift MRI can help distinguish thymic hyperplasia from lymphoma or germ cell tumor when the clinical picture is ambiguous. Small organ, big interpretive consequences.
