Description
Posterior anatomy of the female upper limb is presented with the triceps brachii as the dominant extensor mass on the dorsal arm. The long head arises proximally from the infraglenoid tubercle of the scapula and runs inferiorly between teres minor and teres major before joining the lateral and medial heads on the posterior humerus. Laterally, the lateral head occupies the posterolateral surface of the humeral shaft superior to the radial (spiral) groove, while the medial head lies deeper and more medial, becoming most apparent distally as the common tendon narrows toward the olecranon of the ulna. Surrounding posterior-chain landmarks include the deltoid over the shoulder, trapezius and latissimus dorsi across the back, the erector spinae along the vertebral column, and the gluteal and hamstring groups continuing into the calf with gastrocnemius and soleus. For teaching and clinical correlation, the posterior view clarifies the relationship between the triceps heads and the radial nerve as it traverses the radial groove with the profunda brachii artery, a setup that explains wrist drop after midshaft humeral fractures and iatrogenic risk during posterior humeral exposure. It also frames the long head as a functional bridge between scapulohumeral motion and elbow extension, a point that matters when interpreting weakness after axillary nerve injury, shoulder instability, or posterior shoulder surgical approaches. Triceps tendon pathology is easier to localize here.
