Description
Posterior surface anatomy of a female upper limb is rendered with the triceps brachii emphasized along the back of the arm from the posterior axillary fold to the olecranon. Proximally, the long head descends from the infraglenoid tubercle of the scapula between teres minor superiorly and teres major inferiorly, while the lateral and medial heads arise from the posterior humerus and converge toward a common tendon. Distally, the tendon thickens as it crosses the posterior aspect of the elbow and inserts on the olecranon of the ulna, lying superficial to the posterior joint capsule and adjacent to the olecranon bursa. Surrounding posterior musculature, including the deltoid, trapezius, and latissimus dorsi, provides regional landmarks and context for the arm’s extensor compartment. For teaching and clinical work, this is the clearest orientation for tracking the triceps tendon and its relationship to the posterior elbow, where partial tears and complete ruptures present after a fall on an outstretched hand or during heavy eccentric loading and can be missed without a firm grasp of the tendon’s distal contour. The radial nerve’s course in the spiral (radial) groove is clinically relevant here because it lies deep to the lateral head in the mid-arm and becomes vulnerable in humeral shaft fractures or during posterior approaches for fixation.
