Description

Centered on the right pulmonary hilum, the medial segmental artery is traced in anterior view as a branch of the right pulmonary artery coursing medially into the medial segment of the right middle lobe. Proximal to its segmental takeoff, the pulmonary trunk and right pulmonary artery lie anterior to the right main bronchus, while the right superior pulmonary vein runs anteroinferior to the arterial branches as it drains toward the left atrium. Superiorly, the aortic arch and proximal great vessels frame the mediastinal backdrop, and the trachea descends in the midline before bifurcating into the main bronchi posterior to the pulmonary arteries. Segmental pulmonary arterial anatomy matters most at the level where teaching diagrams become operative and interventional roadmaps. During right middle lobectomy or segmentectomy, surgeons rely on the predictable relationship of segmental arteries to accompanying bronchi to isolate and divide the correct pedicle while preserving adjacent perfusion. It also guides pulmonary angiography and CT pulmonary angiogram interpretation, where emboli can lodge at lobar and segmental levels, and where variant branching can mimic or obscure an occlusion. For thoracic surgery and radiology curricula, this anterior perspective supports stepwise identification of the right pulmonary artery branches at the hilum, then their distribution into lobes and segments, with the pulmonary veins kept distinct for safe dissection. It also fits cardiopulmonary anatomy chapters in medical textbooks and board review materials that need a clean, labeled reference for right-sided segmental perfusion patterns. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
