Description
Rendered as a 3D model of the male eye in section, the iris forms an annulus anterior to the lens with the pupil as its central aperture, and the minor arterial circle runs circumferentially near the pupillary margin as a fine anastomotic ring of arterioles. Radially oriented iris vessels approach this circle from the ciliary region, while the cornea and sclera define the anterior coat and the optic nerve exits posteriorly. Posterior to the iris, the lens sits just behind the pupillary plane, with the ciliary body and choroid forming the vascular uveal tract around it. Small, tight anatomy. Emphasis on the minor arterial circle of the iris matters because it sits at the interface between pupillary ruff and iris stroma, a region frequently manipulated in anterior segment surgery. Sphincterotomies, iridectomies, and pupil expansion devices can disrupt these perilimbal arterioles and their anastomosis, contributing to intraoperative iris bleeding, postoperative hyphema, and sectoral iris atrophy. This view also supports teaching of iris perfusion patterns relevant to ischemic syndromes such as uveitis-associated rubeosis iridis and neovascular glaucoma, where abnormal vessels arise on the iris surface and at the angle but remain fed by the underlying arterial arcade.
