Description
Running along the lateral (radial) border of the anterior forearm, the radial artery descends from the cubital fossa deep to brachioradialis, then becomes more superficial in the distal third as it approaches the radial styloid and the wrist. Proximally it lies lateral to the flexor carpi radialis tendon and medial to the brachioradialis tendon, with the radial recurrent artery often arising near its origin. At the wrist the vessel relates closely to the distal radius and carpal region, then turns dorsally around the radial side to enter the anatomical snuffbox. Palpation land. Clinically, this anterior course is the one used for the radial pulse just proximal to the scaphoid and trapezium, and it is the path at risk during volar approaches to the distal radius (for example, open reduction and internal fixation of a Colles fracture) when dissection strays too far laterally. Radial artery cannulation for arterial blood gas sampling and continuous blood pressure monitoring targets this segment, so the relationship to flexor carpi radialis and the superficial branch of the radial nerve near the distal forearm matters. The same anatomy underpins Allen test planning before harvest of the radial artery as a coronary artery bypass graft.
