Description

Running along the anterolateral forearm, the radial artery descends from the brachial artery bifurcation in the cubital fossa and tracks distally toward the radial styloid. Proximally it lies deep to brachioradialis and lateral to the flexor carpi radialis tendon, with venae comitantes and superficial veins coursing in parallel. An anterior perspective also brings the biceps brachii tendon and bicipital aponeurosis into the proximal field, with the radius and ulna providing the skeletal framework for the flexor and extensor compartments. Clear relationships. Clinically, this course explains why the radial pulse is palpated just lateral to flexor carpi radialis at the distal radius and why transradial arterial access targets the vessel proximal to the wrist crease. The illustration also supports teaching around iatrogenic and traumatic complications, including radial artery occlusion after catheterization and the need to confirm adequate ulnar collateral flow via the superficial palmar arch (Allen test) before prolonged cannulation. For reconstructive surgery, the segmental anatomy matters during harvest of a radial forearm free flap, where preservation of surrounding tendons and superficial veins affects both perfusion and donor-site morbidity. Faculty can drop this plate directly into upper-limb gross anatomy labs, vascular blocks, and procedural skills curricula covering arterial line placement and catheter-based coronary intervention. Publishers will find it well suited for textbooks and patient-facing diagrams that need a faithful anterior map of the radial artery against recognizable forearm musculature and wrist tendons. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
