Description
Running down the anterolateral forearm, the radial artery continues from the brachial artery just distal to the cubital fossa, where the bifurcation into radial and ulnar arteries occurs. Proximally it lies lateral to the tendon of flexor carpi radialis and deep to brachioradialis, then tracks toward the radial styloid at the distal radius. Superficial venous channels accompany the arterial course, with the cephalic vein positioned laterally, the basilic vein more medial, and the median cubital vein crossing the anterior elbow to connect them. Smaller arterioles and venules branch distally toward the wrist and hand. Anterior projection of the radial artery matters because it matches the bedside landmarks used for radial pulse palpation and transradial arterial cannulation, including access for coronary angiography and arterial line placement. The relationship to the flexor carpi radialis tendon helps orient the cannulation site, while the nearby superficial veins at the cubital fossa frame common venipuncture territory and remind learners that arterial puncture errors most often occur where venous and arterial targets lie close together. A clean course. Little redundancy.
