Description
Running along the medial (ulnar) aspect of the anterior forearm, the ulnar artery is traced from its origin at the brachial artery bifurcation in the cubital fossa to its distal course toward the wrist and hand. Proximally it passes deep to the superficial flexor mass, then continues on the anterior compartment between flexor digitorum superficialis and flexor digitorum profundus, accompanied by the ulnar venae comitantes. Near the distal forearm the vessel lies just lateral to the flexor carpi ulnaris tendon, with the ulna forming the deep medial bony landmark and the radius positioned more laterally. Clinically, this anterior perspective clarifies why the ulnar artery is less accessible than the radial artery for routine arterial cannulation and why it is vulnerable during deep volar lacerations on the ulnar side of the wrist. Distally, its relationship to the pisiform and hook of hamate region anticipates entry into Guyon’s canal, where adjacent ulnar nerve symptoms can accompany vascular injury or ulnar artery thrombosis (hypothenar hammer syndrome). Short and direct. You can follow the transition from forearm conduit to contributor of the superficial palmar arch.
