Description

Arising from the profunda brachii artery, the radial collateral artery descends in the lateral arm and approaches the elbow anteriorly, tracking toward the region of the lateral epicondyle. Proximally it lies deep to the brachioradialis and extensor carpi radialis longus as it transitions from the posterior compartment, then contributes to the periarticular anastomosis with the radial recurrent artery in the proximal forearm. Surrounding vessels expected in this anterior presentation include the brachial artery in the medial bicipital groove with its bifurcation into radial and ulnar arteries at the cubital fossa, and the paired venae comitantes that mirror the arterial paths. Superficial venous channels such as the cephalic vein laterally, basilic vein medially, and the median cubital vein bridging them are positioned in the subcutaneous tissue overlying the elbow crease. This anterior mapping matters because the radial collateral artery is a key contributor to the lateral elbow collateral circulation that maintains distal perfusion when the brachial artery is compressed or transiently occluded.
