Description
Framed from an anterior perspective in an adult male, the large intestine is rendered with prominent haustra and appendices epiploicae, with the descending colon tracking inferiorly along the left flank toward the sigmoid colon and pelvic brim. Against that colonic backdrop, the vermiform appendix and its mesoappendix are treated as the focal region, with the appendicular artery coursing distally within the mesoappendix toward the appendiceal tip while accompanying veins run in parallel. Proximally, the vessel’s origin is consistent with a branch of the ileocolic artery in the right lower quadrant, then it travels obliquely and inferiorly to reach the terminal organ. Fine mesenteric vascular arcades around the colon provide orientation for regional blood supply. An anterior rendering of the appendicular artery matters because this is the vessel that most often declares itself in appendicitis and appendectomy, bleeding briskly when the mesoappendix is divided without secure control. Ligation or energy sealing is typically performed close to the appendix to avoid traction or thermal spread toward the ileocolic pedicle, and an inflamed, foreshortened mesoappendix can obscure the artery’s course. One artery, narrow margin. Educators can drop this artwork into gross anatomy teaching on midgut derivatives, appendiceal relations, and mesenteric vessels, or into surgical training materials describing laparoscopic appendectomy steps, mesoappendix windows, and safe pedicle control. Medical publishers will also find it well suited for chapters on acute appendicitis, periappendiceal abscess, and intraoperative hemorrhage risk tied to appendicular artery anatomy.
