Description
Running from the aortic root to the plantar arch, the arterial tree is mapped over an anterior view of the adult male skeleton, with the heart region giving rise to the ascending aorta, aortic arch, and descending thoracic aorta before continuing as the abdominal aorta. Superiorly, the brachiocephalic trunk, left common carotid artery, and left subclavian artery course toward the neck and upper limb, with the subclavian becoming the axillary and then brachial artery as it passes inferior to the clavicle and along the medial arm. Inferior to the diaphragm, the aorta bifurcates into the right and left common iliac arteries, continuing as the external iliac and femoral arteries anterior to the pelvis and proximal thigh, then as the popliteal, anterior tibial, and dorsalis pedis along the anterior leg and dorsum of the foot. Bone landmarks anchor the pathways, including the clavicles, sternum, ribs, pelvis, femur, tibia, and fibula. For teaching and clinical orientation, an anterior full body layout makes it easy to follow continuity across regions, from central elastic arteries to more distal muscular arteries and arterioles. Surface projection matters. Palpation points line up with the course of the common carotid artery in the neck, the brachial artery in the medial bicipital groove for blood pressure measurement, the femoral artery at the mid-inguinal point for access, and the dorsalis pedis artery on the dorsum of the foot for peripheral perfusion checks. This is also the roadmap used when planning arterial cannulation, interpreting limb ischemia patterns, or explaining embolic distribution from the aorta into the lower extremities.
