Description
Running in an anterior, radiographic-style cutaway, the arterial tree is centered on the heart with the ascending aorta continuing into the aortic arch and then descending through the thorax and upper abdomen. Superior to the heart, the brachiocephalic trunk, left common carotid artery, and left subclavian artery branch from the arch, with the common carotids ascending in the neck and the subclavians coursing laterally beneath the clavicles toward the axilla. Distal to the axillary artery, the brachial artery tracks inferiorly along the medial arm. Major venous conduits may be faintly present for orientation, including the superior vena cava and inferior vena cava, but arterial pathways dominate. Anterior projections like this are the workhorse for teaching mediastinal and cervicothoracic vascular anatomy because they let you trace continuity from the left ventricle to the great vessels without the visual distraction of posterior structures. It also maps cleanly onto common diagnostic and procedural scenarios: coarctation of the aorta near the aortic isthmus, aneurysmal dilation of the aortic root or arch, and catheter trajectories during coronary angiography or endovascular aortic repair, where recognizing the arch branches and their left to right order prevents wrong-vessel selection. A simple layout. Easy to annotate. Use it in gross anatomy and cardiovascular physiology courses when you need a single plate that links the heart to the major thoracic and abdominal vessels, or in patient-facing education to explain where an aortic aneurysm or carotid stenosis sits in relation to the sternum, clavicles, and neck.
