Description
Seen from the anterior aspect, the distal femur and proximal tibia and fibula form the femorotibial joint, with the patella positioned anterior to the trochlea and the tibial tuberosity lying inferior to it. A periarticular genicular network courses around the knee, with the popliteal artery (posterior in vivo) giving rise to superior medial and superior lateral genicular arteries that sweep medially and laterally above the femoral condyles, and inferior medial and inferior lateral genicular arteries passing below the joint line toward the tibial plateau. Anterior tibial recurrent branches and small arterioles contribute to an anastomotic ring around the patella and proximal tibia. Clear landmarks. Because collateral flow matters at the knee, this anterior mapping of the genicular arteries is the view you want when teaching how the limb maintains perfusion across flexion, compression, or proximal occlusion. The network becomes clinically concrete in popliteal artery injury after knee dislocation, where intact genicular anastomoses may mask ischemia, and in planning incisions that threaten the inferior lateral genicular artery near the fibular head and the common fibular (peroneal) nerve. It also supports discussion of genicular artery embolization for knee osteoarthritis pain, where selective catheterization targets hypertrophied synovial branches while avoiding non-target embolization.
