Description
Running in the anterior compartment of the leg, the extensor digitorum longus (EDL) forms a slender muscle belly that lies lateral to tibialis anterior and medial to the fibularis (peroneus) muscles. Distally, its tendons pass anterior to the ankle joint deep to the superior and inferior extensor retinacula, then diverge toward the dorsum of the foot for insertion into the extensor expansions of digits two through five.
