Description
Centered in an anterior perspective, the liver occupies the right upper quadrant, with the larger right lobe extending laterally and inferiorly and the smaller left lobe crossing the midline toward the epigastrium. Along the inferior margin, the gallbladder lies on the visceral surface, positioned inferior to the right lobe and lateral to the porta hepatis region. Inferiorly, the stomach sits left of midline with the small intestine centrally and the large intestine framing it, while red arterial branches and blue venous channels course over the mesentery and converge toward the portal venous inflow. Relationships read clearly in anatomical position. Emphasis on the hepatic vascular system makes this composition useful for teaching portal circulation, where nutrient rich venous blood from the intestines drains via the superior mesenteric vein and splenic vein to form the portal vein before entering the liver.
