Description
Oriented in anatomical position, the liver is presented from an anterior perspective with the convex diaphragmatic (superior) surface facing the viewer and the inferior border forming a sharp margin. A subtle falciform ligament impression marks the separation of the large right lobe from the smaller left lobe, running toward the superior aspect where it would continue as the coronary ligament on the diaphragm. Laterally, the right lobe extends farther to the right than the left lobe reaches to the left, consistent with normal male hepatic proportions. Surface parenchyma appears smooth. No adjacent viscera obscure the contours. Anterior views matter when teaching surface anatomy and operative orientation, because the apparent right versus left lobe division on the diaphragmatic surface does not correspond to the functional (Cantlie) line used in hepatic surgery and segmental anatomy. That distinction becomes relevant in right hepatectomy planning and in interpreting cross sectional imaging where the middle hepatic vein and gallbladder fossa define the true right and left hemiliver. A clean liver-only presentation also helps learners recognize hepatomegaly patterns by contour rather than by displaced neighboring organs. Clear margins help. Common use cases include gross anatomy lab atlases, hepatobiliary surgery teaching slides, and patient education materials explaining basic liver lobes before discussing portal triad anatomy, cirrhosis morphologic change, or focal lesions.
