Description
Viewed from an anterior torso perspective with a semi-transparent body wall, the hepatic parenchyma dominates the right upper quadrant beneath the right hemidiaphragm, with the larger right lobe extending inferiorly and laterally beyond the smaller left lobe. The left lobe crosses the midline into the epigastrium, lying superior to the stomach region and anterior to the upper abdominal viscera. Inferiorly, loops of small intestine occupy the central abdomen while the frame of the large intestine is partially outlined more peripherally. Superior to the liver, the trachea and proximal bronchi sit in the midline and bifurcate into the thorax. Clear orientation. Anterior views like this matter when you need to teach surface projections and organ topography in patients with obesity, where increased abdominal wall thickness and altered diaphragmatic position can change the expected palpation points and sonographic windows. Clinically, the right lobe’s inferior margin is the edge most often assessed for hepatomegaly, and the depiction supports discussion of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and steatohepatitis, conditions with higher prevalence in obesity and common downstream implications for cirrhosis risk and transplant evaluation. The relationship to bowel gas also sets up a practical ultrasound problem: overlying colon and small bowel can obscure the hepatic dome and limit assessment of the anterior segments. Use this artwork in gross anatomy and radiologic anatomy courses to anchor the liver’s lobar proportions and its position relative to midline structures in an adult male body habitus.
